mediterranean, citrus trees, stepped well
An Orchard estate situated in the heart of Punjab, this site contains more than 700 Citrus trees. The landscape design is an amalgamation of the Mediterranean as well as Native styles.
Located in the countryside, the rustic materials with earthy tones of terracotta, rough sandstone, stone grit and adobe provide a distinct charm to this place. The vines and creepers hanging on the façade further amplify the villa’s beauty. A large, pre-existing Ficus benghalensis (Banyan tree) is conserved and even celebrated by providing a seating and dining space all around it.
A Baoli or a stepped well is designed at the natural low point of the site, with four narrow water channels culminating and flowing down into it. The sunken element is deliberately added as it provides private space for people to sit, and it also doesn’t hinder the strong visual axis that ends at the villa, at the best end of the site. The water channels running throughout the site are inspired by the irrigation channel system of the surrounding agricultural fields.
